The Science of BLIS

Probiotics (pro=for, bios = life) are beneficial live bacteria that help the body deal with pathogenic (bad) bacteria.

Professor John Tagg discovered specific strains of ‘friendly’ bacteria have advanced ways of dealing with the bad bacteria, his work focuses on Streptococcus salivarius which is the most abundant bacteria in the mouth.  It normally resides in the mouths of healthy people and its is one indication of healthy immune function and natural resistance to infections that enter through the mouth.

We know that most friendly bacteria work by ‘crowding out’ bad bacteria, thereby preventing us from getting ill.  But certain types of bacteria also naturally produce additional antibacterial substances made of peptides and proteins that block infection-causing bacteria.

Blis probiotics – BLIS K12 and BLIS M18 – are these specific strains of Streptococcus salivarius  - they are advanced probiotics because they not only crowd out the bad stuff – they stop them coming back through actively producing antibacterial proteins when they are under threat from a potential disease-causing bacteria.

These anti-bacterial proteins are called Bacteriocin-like Inhibitory Substances and it is the inspiration for our company name and the name of our patented strains BLIS K12™and BLIS M18™.

Blis probiotics have been extensively safety-tested and have been commercially used now for more than 15 years. Streptococcus salivarius is the dominant organism in a healthy oral cavity. It’s found in breast milk and is listed as a Biosafety Level 1 (safest) organism in the USA.
